Reopened in June, 2005 following a $30 million renovation, the Delaware Art Museum is home to the works of many members of the school of art named for the Brandywine. The centerpiece is an extensive of collection of works by Wilmington, Del., native Howard Pyle - known as the "Father of American Illustration" - and of the students he influenced, including N.C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, Stanley Arthurs and Maxfield Parrish.

The Collection
The museum houses an extensive collection of American artworks dating from 1840 to the present, presenting an overview of the development of American art from Winslow Homer and Thomas Eakins to John Sloan and Andrew Wyeth. Many significant contemporary artists are also represented, including Al Held, Robert Indiana, Wendell Castle and Claes Oldenburg.

Another highlight of the museum's holding is its superb collection of the lush, romantic art of the English Pre-Raphaelites, the largest such collection outside England. Paintings and other works by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt, Edward Burne Jones and others are included.

The museum is home to the Helen Farr Sloan Library, named for the widow of American painter John Sloan (a major museum benefactor). The library has over 40,000 volumes on art and art history.
